Summary of "Tapping Tech for Smoother Traffic" Draft #2

In the article “Tapping Tech for smoother traffic”, Tay (2018) reported that Singapore is progressing towards its vision of a smart and car lite nation by tapping on technology over the decades. Tay stated that, Singapore faced many issues in its transport system being a land scare country. Having the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and the Area Licensing Scheme (ALS), was not enough to cope with its transport demands. Tay mentioned that, The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has introduced the Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which has a large network of systems that uses technology to collect real-time traffic information. That will aid road users in planning for their journey. Tay claimed that, based on statistics these implementations were able to reduce motorist’s travelling time which translates into reduction of cost. Tay concluded that Singapore will be looking to tap on technology to improve its transport system.

By looking at all the implementations that were introduced, it seems to me that technology plays and will continue to be a vital component to Singapore’s transport system if Singapore wants to achieve its vision of being a smart and car lite nation. But on the other hand, I feel that other factors as well as new polices must be taken into consideration to make Singapore’s transport system a more holistic one.

Self Introductory email

Subject: Self-introduction

Dear Professor Blackstone,

I am Ong Jun Heng, a student in your class,SIE2016-Effective Communication.I am a Year 1 student currently studying Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land). I am just like any ordinary Singaporean who went through the typical education path and graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

I am fearful to encounter failure as I tend to be more of a perfectionist. I struggled to enjoy engineering initially as I do not always get my desired outcome during experiments. But I learned to enjoy it over the years as I got to do more hands on and was able to understand the technical stuff when I put my hands to it. The most memorable experience I had in the field of engineering was a practical lesson that taught us how to dismantle and overhaul a car engine. I was amazed by the complexity of the car engine which stirred my desire to learn more. Studying engineering allows me to fail and try again through prototype-making and simulations.

My weaknesses in communication are not being able to express myself fully through my body language as well as my tone of speech. I am also very fearful of public speaking. Usually I am more reserved when interacting with others and be very tensed up in front of a huge audience. A nickname that was given to me was “Man of few words”. But I am much more comfortable in smaller groups and with my peers. However, my strength is being able to share an idea clearly and directly with anyone. I go straight to the point and summarize my entire message.

I hope that through this module, I will be able to sharpen public speaking skills as well as being able to express myself more holistically.

Best Regards,
Ong Jun Heng

Informal Assignment 1

Hi all, I am Jun Heng, i was from Ngee Ann Polytechnic previously. I would like to share my view regarding a quote. The quote is as follows: "Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter." By Gilbert Amelio, President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp.

I personally agrees and believe in that quote. For a leader to pass on great knowledge or ideas that one may have is through sharing. The leader must be able to express oneself well enough to convey the proper message in its purest form. I feel that if a leader can't get the intended message across clearly to the audience, no matter how great his message can be it can never impact his audience. The leader must owned the message and strongly believe in it then will one be able to share his heart and convey the message clearly.
